Healthcare in South Hawaii

As with many rural communities, healthcare facilities in South Hawaii are limited.  There are a number of doctors in Hilo and Kailua Kona, but take into account that depending on your location and traffic, a commute can take you one to two or three hours one way.  Recently the Ocean View community received the donation of an ambulance and funding to staff it with emergency medical technicians.  Serious medical emergencies are sometimes handled by helicopter ambulance.  For very specialized treatment you may even have to take a plane to Oahu to reach an appropriate facility.  I strongly encourage you to investigate the availability of medical care that suits your needs before moving to South Hawaii.
