Mark Twain
Estates

many lots with expansive ocean and mountain views and lush surroundings

Between the 69 and 70 mile markers on Highway 11 you will see the sign for South Point Road. This road takes you to Ka Lae otherwise known as South Point, the southernmost point in the United States.  A short way down South Point Road traveling makai, you will see a turnoff to the left which is called Kamaoa Road.  This road runs from South Point Road and intersects Highway 11 in the town of Wai'ohinu near the 66 mile marker.

Mark Twain Estates is a nice community with about 550 lots, most between 15,000 and 20,000 square feet in size.  Un-maintained lots are likely to be overgrown with Christmas berry trees and will require dozing or much chain sawing to clear.

Though county water may be available, some people still use catchment systems here because the cost to hook up to county water can be prohibitive.  Water meters are located on Kamaoa Road (paved road runs between South Point Road and the highway in Waiohinu) as well as on Wakea Street (paved county street dividing Mark Twain Estates and Discovery Harbour).  The lots can be as far as a mile away from the water meter requiring the owner to run a water line a great distance to their lot (under roadways and driveways) and the meter costs alone can be between $3,000 to $5,000.

Electricity is widely available in the subdivision.  The graded roads are privately maintained and are a bit bumpy in some places. A few roads have become totally overgrown and are impassable.  In the right photo below you will see mauka views on a cloudy day.

There are two main entrances to the Mark Twain Estates, one is directly off Kamaoa Road and the other is through Wakea Avenue, the main entrance of the neighboring community of Discovery Harbour.

This area receives a generous amount of rainfall which lends to its abundance of lush greenery.  A photo of an overgrown lot above shows the invasive Christmas berry tree taking over.  Picture on right shows a lot that's been bulldozed and the first stages of a house being built.
