Newspapers on the Big Island

Three main newspapers service the Big Island.  The Tribune Herald focuses on the eastern, Hilo side of the island while West Hawaii Today tends to reflect the needs of the west side, but both papers serve the entire island to some degree.  A third newspaper the Hawaii Island Journal is a free bi-weekly that can be picked up at newsstands around the island or subscribed to for mail delivery.

You can get a flavor of each of these papers from their websites.  All of these publications have a fairly local small community feel to them and are a good way to tap into important issues that are affecting the island.  Don't be too put off by the occasional typo or misspelling. These papers have very small staffs and I am sure very demanding schedules.  Read the letters to the editor, (keeping in mind that some types of people are more inclined to write their opinions than others), and you will get a chance to see what some people are complaining about.  These papers also have a fair share of "good news" in their pages, something you might not see in other parts of the country.

If you are moving here from elsewhere, consider subscribing to one or more of the papers.  In addition to seeing what issues are being talked about, you can also get a peek at the sale prices of foods, cars, and other items.
