It is believed that the area around Lyman’s, like many other places on the islands, was once favored by Kanaloa, the god of the sea, who was also associated with healing and navigation. Hawaiian myths often describe how Kanaloa would guide navigators across the Pacific and protect those who revered the ocean. The spot’s gently powerful waves were thought to be god’s way of showing favor to the land, offering both sustenance and recreation to the people of the Big Island.
In Hawaiian culture, surf spots weren’t just places for recreation; they were often deeply connected to spiritual beliefs. It’s said that Lyman’s Surf Spot, because of its beauty and consistency, was once considered a sacred spot. Waves there were thought to be favored by Ku (the god of war) and Kanaloa, both of whom controlled the seas and would help guide surfers through the waves. I surfed there in the 1980s.
