The Dream
Kaloko and ʻAimakapā fishponds, located near Honokōhau, were important for aquaculture and are often associated with spiritual and cultural practices. In Hawaiian tradition, fishponds were sometimes watched over by moʻo, or water spirits. These shapeshifting lizard or dragon-like beings were known to guard freshwater sources and were sometimes worshipped or offered tributes in exchange for protection or bounty.
It's believed that disturbing or disrespecting areas cared for by moʻo could result in misfortune. The presence of these spirits could be felt in the stillness of water or the appearance of rain and mist.
